What does an artificial eye do?
An artificial eye is necessary to maintain the orbit’s size and shape and creates an aesthetic appearance. It recreates the appearance of your eye for a natural-looking result.

Is an artificial eye made from glass?
Artificial eyes are made using resin (PMMA) and have not been made from glass for many years.

What result can I expect?
A custom-made prosthetic eye is discreet. However, the overall result will depend on your injury. Even when well made, an ocular prosthesis can never be an exact replica of the eye you’ve lost.

What about movement?
Movement is an important issue for patients with an prosthetic eye. The degree of movement depends on the patient’s injury and surgery. An prosthetic eye has some movement but is not as mobile as a natural eye.

Fitting the prosthetic eye isn’t painful but it can be uncomfortable. The processes for impressions and adjustments do not require anesthesia or hospitalization.

Why does my eye water?
An artificial eye is a foreign body that can cause chronic inflammation of the palpebral conjunctiva and orbit. Daily cleaning with saline solution and regular polishing will reduce this discharge.

How to clean my artificial eye?
You can clean it every day by rinsing the surface with an eye cleaning solution and a cloth. Your ocularist can provide cleaning products to improve everyday comfort. Your artificial eye should be polished every six months for optimal comfort.
